The Flight to Tokyo, Last Chapter
Jim smiled. Katie was looking at the doll wearing bright yellow kimono. The color was exactly the same as her Clara was wearing. Clara’s dress color was faded so no one can tell what color of dress she was wearing 60 years ago except Jim and Kathleen. They remembered Jim promised to buy Clara’s sister doll who was wearing the same color of the dress, the shape of the dress didn’t matter. It was bright yellow color. In his memory, he bought it just a few months ago in Conneticut.

“Thank you, Jim. You never disappoint me. I love you. I always wanted to see you again. Actually, I believed you were still alive and came back home some day and the military’s notice of killed in action was all lie. As time passed by and I grew up and finally I accepted you were alive. But you were alive and came back to me as the same figure you parted from me.”

"Isn't that a great coincident you are here in Tokyo at the time I came back alive after so many years?" said Jim.
"Well, when I was appointed to work in Tokyo, I was very glad to accept the offer. I was glad I could come to the place where my brother was said to be lost. But now I found you. We are destined to see each other again. That was God's will."
Katie said that with confidence.

Jim and Katie hugged each other. Sayuri smiled and was glad to see their reunion. It was unbelievable that an older brother and younger sister reunited after 60 years but the older brother became younger than his sister.

On the next day, they were on board of the plane to Los Angeles. Kathleen Bolton managed to get him back to the U.S. giving Jim a new identity as young U.S. citizen. They knew the real story of Jim was too unbelievable for the public to accept. Katie made up the story of missing Jim who was a young man disappeared while traveling in Japan a few years ago, who lost his memory but his identity was confirmed. The new identity was James Greg, whose parents died a long time ago and had no relatives. James Greg was going to be hired by Mrs. Bolton’s house as chauffer but he wouldn’t always have to work. He would go to the college to study so many things to gain knowledge of current world.

Jim was looking at the window of the airplane. The plane left Yokota U.S. Air Force base in Tokyo. It was flying above the City of Tokyo. It was evening and dark. The view under his seat looked like what he saw a few days ago, which was actually 60 years ago. Of course Tokyo had taller buildings than 60 years ago but because it was dark, the view looked almost the same from the high altitude.

He just wondered why that happened. Why did he jump into Tokyo of 60 years later? Did he accidentally time-slip? Well, he was never a scientist. He never studied anything of physics or mathematics. But he just felt there was some meaning in this weird event. Some kind of destiny? He never knew what that was.

“Jim, I am going to restroom” Katie in the next seat stood up. The seatbelt sign turned off.
He said nothing and kept seeing the view. Katie went to the restroom.

Jim felt the plane was at the same altitude that his B-29 plane was hit. Suddenly the plane started to shake, there should be turbulence. The turbulence got bigger and bigger. Jim felt frightened. What was going on? The plane suddenly lowered the altitude, Jim felt free falling, it was exactly the same feeling he had before. Then he fainted.

Jim suddenly woke up.
"What is wrong?" said the captain. He was inside cockpit of B-29.
“What is going on? Why not hatch open and dropped bombs?” The captain was asking him.
Jim was back in B-29 plane, where he was a few days ago.

He suddenly became aware of what he should be doing.
“Captain, the hatch seemed to be clogged.”
“Well, we should lower the plane and re-try” said the Captain.
“I suggest not to. It is too risky” Jim replied.
“Are you saying we should give up this honorable mission?”
Captain seemed very angry.
“No, sir. I mean what if we were hit before opening the hatch, we will just lose this plane and ourselves. If we can come back, the army can reuse this plane for another mission. That way is better for the cause.”
Jim tried to convince, and then Captain was convinced. The plane continued to fly at the same altitude of the whole formation. Not opening the hatch and Not dropping the bombs.

60 years and a few days later…..

James Austin was sitting on a passenger seat of the U.S. government jet. He was seeing the night view of Tokyo from the window. The plane was leaving Tokyo for Los Angeles.

James Austin, 81 years old man whose face had many wrinkles and head was bold. But his memories of 81 year long life were clear, especially what happened in 60 years ago. The plane was shaken by the turbulence a little while ago, this time the plane successfully got away from the turbulence and it got back to normal position in the air.
“Jim, are you alright? I was really scared of being shaken in the restroom. It just happened so suddenly” said 70 years-old sister, Kathleen Austin.
“I didn’t care because I knew that would happen. I've already warned the pilots to get ready for that before take-off. I was a pilot, too” replied Jim with confidence.
“Yes, you know things ahead of occurrence. You always did. You knew I could get over the disease and survive. You knew I would graduate from Harvard and meet with my late husband, George. After you were discharged from the Air Force, you started to work in Pentagon. You warned White House not to send President Kennedy to Dallas. You warned Johnson administration not to get involved with the war in Vietnam. They never listened to you. But the consequences were what you predicted. You were like prophet.”
Kathleen described Jim’s psychic ability. For Jim, it was not psychic but knowledge.
“Because they never listened to you, we lost lots of precious lives” said Kathleen with sadness.
“Not all of them” said Jim.
“Yes, you saved a young girl’s life. Her name was Sayuri. She was an interpreter for the speech of her grand mother. You told her not to stay in her apartment a night before the speech event and insisted to stay in her family’s home. Luckily, she didn’t have to be in fire.”
Jim smiled boasting what he did.
“Jim, you presented the speech as ex-B-29 co-pilot. You studied Japanese so hard for that. You gave words that you did not regret that you didn’t lower the plane and drop bombs. That pleased the audience. Was that lip-service? Actually, as an air force man, you had to regret that. You were at war at that time.”
Kathleen asked curiously.
“Katie, actually, I did not regret that because I could see what happened in 60 years from that time. But I did regret because if I had lowered the plane, I could be seeing what’s happening next 60 years from now.”
Kathleen could not understand what his brother meant to say.

THE END

P.S. If you are smart reader, you know what Jim meant to say, think about it.
