Read Chapter 1 first.
Following week a festival day came. A lot of people from the town, neighboring towns and far away came to the town to see the festival which revived fundoshi mikoshi carrying first time in 20 years.
Jacques met a surprising guest, his younger sister, Annes along with shocking news she brought. Annes got divorced with her husband. She got married to him a few years ago but recently he found himself being gay and found a lover. He decided to marry him so he asked her to divorce. Surely Annes accepted divorce but she got badly hurt. Then she decided to fly to Japan to meet her brother and sister in law to change her mind. Jacques and Yuriko recommended her to view the festival for refreshment. They bought her a summer kimono.
It was very fine day for the festival. The sky was clear. The street from the shrine and the beach was very crowded. Kiosk shops were lined up in the shrine premise. Local stores opened with special decoration and sales campaign. Very joyful atmosphere spread from the shrine to the street.
Flute and drum sounds were heard. Annes was guided by Yuriko to the festival places. In such joyful atmoshere Annes still looked unhappy. She was trying to make herself joyful to match herself with the atmosphere but her heartbreak seemed more serious.
The time for the big event, Sea Walk.
It was most spot lighted event. Before the Sea Walk, purification ceremony was done and mikoshi carriers were gathered at the shrine to attend the ceremony. The sharman appeared and presented some gifts to the shrine and prayed. Jacques with his group was very much impressed by the ceremony's solemn style. Very first time for him to view the ceremony like that.
Mikoshi would be lifted and carried by two wood bars underneath the box. People attach their shoulders to the bars to lift the box and carry.
The ceremony ended. Now the mikoshi carrying started. Jacques and his group wore fundoshi under kimono at that moment. They were not naked. From the shrine to the beach the mikoshi will be carried by anybody who wants to including elderly and women. This was for everyone.
Along with the music people started to carry the mikoshi shouting "Wasshoi, Washhoi."
Yuriko joined that. Annes looked at it from a distance. Jacques and Taizo led the mikoshi March or watch over from distance to manage the line. It was kind of difficult to do without harmony of carriers. Mikoshi is portable shrine for carriers. Carriers could feel attached to the divinity by doing what they do. Weight on their shoulders could mean message from the Gods.
The mikoshi reached the beach area. Then the mikoshi was once placed on the set table. Now the carriers were changed. Only men in fundoshi, bandana and tabi shoes would carry it. They took off kimono and became naked only with fundoshi. They wore the same uniform and manly and sun burned. They all lined up showing their bare asses. From the youngster to the elderly, the fat and slendar. Very spectacular scene. Jacques and Taizo stood on the front edge of the mikoshi carrying bar.
All the spectators paid attention to the guys. They took photos of them. Jacques attracted so much attention because he was tall and foreigner with hairy chest. No way to be embarrassed with naked figure with fundoshi.
Strong sunshine fell down on them. The temperature was more than 30 degree. Good for bathing in water. Taizo got away from the mikoshi to lead the whole group. Gen, who was last year's host was with him. Gen was a big fat man. Gen in fundoshi looked like a sumo wrestler.
Gen said to Taizo "it was first time in 20 years. Bathing in the sea wearing fundoshi is very nice!"
"Oh, yes" said Taizo happily.
Jacques was on the front edge of the bar. Taro was next to him carrying the front edge of the other bar. All the men lifted the bars and box of the Mikoshi.Yuriko stairred at them. Next to her was Annes.
Jacques started to shout "Wasshoi, Wasshoi." The mikoshi started to move to the sea.
